The Predators of Raccoon

Raccoons can be found in a variety of environment. They are known for their dark masks that make them distinct from the rest of the wild creatures. Richmond Raccoons are scavengers. They have a brown or dark fur that enables them to conceal their presence. They are nocturnal creatures that will remain active on nighttimes. During this time, they will have to face the threat of their predators.

The Enemies that Richmond Raccoons Have
Knowing the enemies of the raccoons can reduce their presence in your community. However, due to the size of the raccoon, most of their predators can only be found in the wild. This is why they were able to thrive in the urban areas.

Fox
Fox will share the similar ecological place like raccoon. Both of them are known scavengers and also predators. Nonetheless, if the fox is given a chance, it will definitely devour the raccoon without thinking twice. They are predators of different smaller mammals. In fact, some of the manufacturers of repellents have devised a spray deterrent that contains the urine of the fox. They believe that it has the capacity to scare the raccoon and encourage them to look for other places to live.

Coyotes
Coyotes will normally prey on carrions but they are also formidable predators of the raccoons. They will attack the juvenile and the adult raccoons. The coyote will be in a pack when they are hunting but a single coyote will be enough to kill the California raccoon. The raccoons are usually wary of the presence of the coyotes. This is why most homeowners will use a repellent that contain the urine of the coyote. However, we cannot vouch for the efficacy of the product due to limited studies available.

Owl
Based on the official site of the Michigan Natural History, the Great Horned Owl can grow at a maximum of 25 inches in terms of length. Their wing spans at around 60 inches. Usually, they will attack the small rodents like squirrels and mice. Nevertheless, they will also attack the larger urban mammals occasionally such as the skunk, opossums, and raccoons. Normally, their hunger will be satiated by eating the juvenile raccoons but they will also attack the adult raccoons.

Wolves
Aside from being a predator, the wolf also has a habit of scavenging. They have been known for having excellent hunting skills. They will usually hunt in pack in order to bring a larger animal. Just like the Coyotes, a single wolf would be enough to dispatch the raccoon. Apart from the raccoon, the wolf will also attack fish, voles, and beavers.

Humans will also hunt raccoons for their fur. They are also known to be a nuisance creature which is why you need to get rid of them. They will carry diseases that can be transferred to humans and pets. While there are some humans that will hunt them based on necessity there are also humans that will kill them due to sports or in competition.
